The end of the school year is right around the corner! For the next two weeks, let's create summer inspired art! Sandcastles are always fun to make- whether drawing or building! Use your imagination and create your dream sandcastle this week. Check out my dream sandcastle on Padlet! I hope to see yours :) Sandcastle Drawing Step-by-Step Use the step-by-step images below to draw a sandcastle. Add a fun background and color to bring your picture to life! Sandcastle Tutorial Art Hub for Kids has a great sandcastle draw along. Click on the image below to check it out and follow along! Build a Sandcastle
Use your creativity to build your own sandcastle! Do you have a sandbox in your backyard? Do you have paper towel tubes/toilet paper tubes you could transform? What about a lego or block inspired sandcastle? I think we can all agree that animals are awesome. Whether we are learning about their unique characteristics or playing with our pets, animals are truly amazing! My dog, Leo, has been a great co-worker throughout our distance learning. He has sat by my side during our Zoom or Teams sessions and watched me create art over the weeks. (In all honestly, he has been great inspiration over the years- check out some of my Leo artwork below.) Even if you don't have a pet-sidekick at home, animals are fun to draw and create. Let's create some awesome animal artwork this week! Animal/Pet Art: Here are some ideas and resources for you to use this week as you create: -Draw or paint an animal/pet from observation. You can observe in person or even use a photograph. -Take photographs of an animal/pet. Try taking photographs from different locations and angles. -Create a sculpture of an animal/pet using legos, recycled materials, or whatever you can find at home. -The Animal Archives in Art Hub for Kids provides a ton of videos on how to draw animals (real and make-believe) -Art Projects for Kids has step-by-step tutorials on how to draw living things. -View artwork from Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo. Artist Connection:
Take a peak below at some awesome animal artwork! These pieces are all by different artists. I love how all artists see and create animals using their own unique style- that is what makes art so cool! Movement is so important for our bodies! This week we are going to use both movement and art. The picture book Yoga Frog by Nora Carpenter is about a tired frog who becomes energized through yoga. Let's do some yoga together and create our own yoga frog! Want to try some yoga poses? Check out this video from Cosmic Kids and learn 10 different yoga poses. Drawing Yoga Frog Materials Needed: Paper, Pencil, Crayons/Colored Pencils/Markers Think about what yoga pose you want for your frog. Turn your paper so you can fit your frog's yoga pose. Below are the drawing steps for the body, but you can decide how the arms and legs will be positioned. After you have created your yoga frog, add a fun background! Artist Connection: Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker (1834-1917). When I think about the artwork of Degas, I think about all of his ballerina paintings and sculptures. These are great examples of capturing movement within artwork! Hello, Artists! Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10th, and Father's Day is Sunday, June 21st! This week I thought it would be fun to create greeting cards that celebrate the wonderful women and men in our lives. Greeting cards are a great way to let others know you are thinking of them. I hope you find some inspiration below and make something special for someone you love! *This is also Utah Teacher Appreciation Week- you could make a card for your teacher and send a picture! Hello, Highland Park Fifth Graders!!
Every year the Highland Park fifth graders have the honor of submitting designs for our school t-shirts. If you would like to participate, here is what you need to do: -Get a regular, white piece of paper (8.5in by 11in) -Create a simple design that represents Highland Park -Send an email of a picture of your design to Emily Koelliker by Friday, May 15th - [email protected] -Save your real picture; it will be needed when the PTA creates the t-shirts Tips for Success: -Include our school name (Highland Park Elementary) -Include the school year (2020-2021) -Space out letters and numbers so everything is easy to read -Make one big drawing so it is clear and easy to see -Create your own design/drawing- do not use something you find from the internet (that could lead to copyright issues) -When creating a design, think about what makes Highland Park unique and special Feel free to email me if you need help getting started or want me to check your design/provide feedback! [email protected] *Below are two t-shirt examples from previous years Hello, Artists! I was doing some work outside over the weekend, and I noticed that our apple tree is blooming. It made me think about the old saying, "April showers bring May flowers". Here we are moving from April to May this week- Let's enjoy and create some beautiful flowers! *Next week is Mother's Day and Utah Teacher Appreciation Week. I will be sharing fun ways to make greeting cards at home. Maybe you could save your art this week and bundle it with a card next week- what a nice gift for someone special! Happy Flower Paint Along Check out this draw and paint along provided by Deep Space Sparkle (recorded live on their website a couple of weeks ago). Click the image below and find a drawing you would like to try! Create a Recycled Robot Do you have any materials at home waiting to be recycled? Why not turn them into a robot?! Pieces of cardboard, boxes, lids, caps- anything works! All you need is glue and a good imagination :) Artist Connection: Earth Art Inspired by Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson
Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson are both artists who have created beautiful art with natural materials (rocks, sticks, leaves, etc.). Take a look at some of their work below (you might recognize the Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson because it is located in Utah!). Using Goldsworthy and Smithson as inspiration, can you find materials outside and create a cool design or picture? Hello! Last week I was riding my bike around a nearby neighborhood, and I noticed a row of houses that all had rainbows in the windows. It made me smile, and it also made me think about a story we read in pre-kindergarten titled Maybe Something Beautiful. Maybe Something Beautiful is a picture book about how art changed a neighborhood. I thought it would be fun to create something beautiful this week to make our families, friends, and neighbors smile. Listen to the story below, and create something beautiful! Create your own mini-mural using ideas from the book Maybe Something Beautiful On a white piece of paper, create a variety of geometric and organic shapes. Geometric shapes are regular shapes made out of straight lines and angles. Organic shapes are irregular shapes and often have a curvy flow. Organize your shapes however you would like, and add colors that make you happy. Here are some ideas from the book Maybe Something Beautiful you could use for your mini-mural: Create a chalk mural The weather is getting warmer, and it's nice to create outside when we can! If you have chalk at home, make something outside for your family, friends, and neighbors to see. Create an inspirational quote poster Find a quote that you like. Read through the quote a few times, and pick out a couple of words you want to emphasize (make stand out). I like to sketch these words first and then fill in the other words around. Add banners, shapes, and lines around the words as you wish. Trace everything with a black marker, and fill in areas with color as you see fit. I will be posting some of my favorite quotes to Padlet throughout the week. Artist Connection: Lisa Congdon Below are some beautiful quotes created by artist/illustrator, Lisa Congdon. Lisa currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon. She has created illustrations for many companies throughout the world, and she has even written a few books! Images from lisacongdon.com
Hello, Artists! Can you believe it is April already?! This month our Superintendent is providing daily challenges to keep us inspired and engaged during our time apart. April 8th (Wednesday) is "Draw a Bird Day". Guess what?! Both Highland Park and Liberty have birds as school mascots! I thought it would be fun for us to create either a Roadrunner or Eagle to go along with "Draw a Bird Day". Let's show our school spirit! Click on the video links below, and check out the tutorials created by Art Hub for Kids. I will be posting my drawings to Padlet and Instagram this week. I'd love to see what you're creating, too! Artist Connection: Birds by Pete Cromer Pete Cromer is an Australian artist who creates beautiful birds and animals.
