Hello, Artists! I was doing some work outside over the weekend, and I noticed that our apple tree is blooming. It made me think about the old saying, "April showers bring May flowers". Here we are moving from April to May this week- Let's enjoy and create some beautiful flowers! *Next week is Mother's Day and Utah Teacher Appreciation Week. I will be sharing fun ways to make greeting cards at home. Maybe you could save your art this week and bundle it with a card next week- what a nice gift for someone special! Happy Flower Paint Along Check out this draw and paint along provided by Deep Space Sparkle (recorded live on their website a couple of weeks ago). At the end of the tutorial, they read a book about Georgia O'Keeffe. Georgia O'Keeffe is one of our artist connections this week! Step-by-Step Drawings I have always loved to doodle flowers. Here are some fun, inspirational steps by illustrator Kate Kyehyun Park featured on my modernmet.com. Step-by-step drawings are a great way to learn new techniques! Origami Flowers Not in the mood to draw this week? Check out one of the origami flower tutorials by Art Hub for Kids! Tip: I usually don't have origami paper available, so I cut down computer paper or notebook paper instead :) Artist Connection: Flowers by Georgia O'Keeffe and Claude Monet
Learn about Georgia O'Keeffe and Claude Monet. Both of these artists have created beautiful paintings featuring flowers. Check out some of their work below!

Create a Recycled Robot Do you have any materials at home waiting to be recycled? Why not turn them into a robot?! Pieces of cardboard, boxes, lids, caps- anything works! All you need is glue and a good imagination :) Artist Connection: Earth Art Inspired by Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson
Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson are both artists who have created beautiful art with natural materials (rocks, sticks, leaves, etc.). Take a look at some of their work below (you might recognize the Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson because it is located in Utah!). Using Goldsworthy and Smithson as inspiration, can you find materials outside and create a cool design or picture? Hello! Last week I was riding my bike around a nearby neighborhood, and I noticed a row of houses that all had rainbows in the windows. It made me smile, and it also made me think about a story we read in pre-kindergarten titled Maybe Something Beautiful. Maybe Something Beautiful is a picture book about how art changed a neighborhood. I thought it would be fun to create something beautiful this week to make our families, friends, and neighbors smile. Listen to the story below, and create something beautiful! Create your own mini-mural using ideas from the book Maybe Something Beautiful On a white piece of paper, create a variety of geometric and organic shapes. Geometric shapes are regular shapes made out of straight lines and angles. Organic shapes are irregular shapes and often have a curvy flow. Organize your shapes however you would like, and add colors that make you happy. Here are some ideas from the book Maybe Something Beautiful you could use for your mini-mural: Create a chalk mural The weather is getting warmer, and it's nice to create outside when we can! If you have chalk at home, make something outside for your family, friends, and neighbors to see. Create an inspirational quote poster Find a quote that you like. Read through the quote a few times, and pick out a couple of words you want to emphasize (make stand out). I like to sketch these words first and then fill in the other words around. Add banners, shapes, and lines around the words as you wish. Trace everything with a black marker, and fill in areas with color as you see fit. I will be posting some of my favorite quotes to Padlet throughout the week. Artist Connection: Lisa Congdon Below are some beautiful quotes created by artist/illustrator, Lisa Congdon. Lisa currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon. She has created illustrations for many companies throughout the world, and she has even written a few books! Images from lisacongdon.com
Hello, Artists! Can you believe it is April already?! This month our Superintendent is providing daily challenges to keep us inspired and engaged during our time apart. April 8th (Wednesday) is "Draw a Bird Day". Guess what?! Both Highland Park and Liberty have birds as school mascots! I thought it would be fun for us to create either a Roadrunner or Eagle to go along with "Draw a Bird Day". Let's show our school spirit! Click on the video links below, and check out the tutorials created by Art Hub for Kids. I will be posting my drawings to Padlet and Instagram this week. I'd love to see what you're creating, too! Artist Connection: Birds by Pete Cromer Pete Cromer is an Australian artist who creates beautiful birds and animals. (If you're a second grader, you may remember creating a collage based off of his work this past fall) Pete has recently provided a few art activities for us to use at home during our distance learning. Below I have uploaded the art activities for you to check out. Enjoy!! Pete Cromer and Artwork. Images from: https://www.facebook.com/petecromercreative/
